2023 GYLD China Tour in Anhui

11月9日至12日,2023年“国际青年中国行”走进安徽,来自10个国家的十几名国际青年在这里探寻徽风皖韵的独特魅力,感受江淮大地涌动的科技创新活力,领略安徽高质量发展的“皖”美答卷。副院长孙明出席活动并在欢迎午宴致辞。

November 9-12, 2023, GYLD members from ten countries visited Anhui Province, experiencing the distinctive charm of Anhui's unique culture and artistic atmosphere as well as the vibrant, dynamic technological innovation in this southeastern Chinese province that are a result of the remarkable high-quality development that Anhui has achieved. Sun Ming, the Vice Dean of the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies (ACCWS) also participated in the event and spoke at the event's welcome luncheon.

在安徽省会合肥,科研种子正在这里生根发芽、茁壮成长,“科里科气”也成为这座城市的新特质。在合肥西郊的“科学岛”上,一个飘扬着五星红旗的巨大“罐子”吸引了国际青年目光。这就是中国科学院合肥物质科学研究院科学家们正聚力攻关的“人造太阳”全超导托卡马克核聚变实验装置(EAST)。国际青年与青年科学家们热切交流,了解人类“未来能源”——核聚d变能源的科学知识,振奋于合肥物质科学研究院“更高质量点亮‘人造太阳’”的奋斗目标。

In Hefei, the capital city of Anhui Province, the“seeds” of research efforts are taking root, sprouting, and thriving. The scientific feel of the city is overwhelming and on“Science Island” in the western suburbs of Hefei, a colossal“vessel” adorned with a China’s national flag captured the attention of the participants. This is the home of the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), a research device that is attempting to create an“artificial sun,” led by scientists from the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. GYLD members spoke with young scientists and learned about nuclear fusion - the“energy of the future”, coming away truly inspired by the Institute’s ambition to“illuminate the world with a‘man-made sun’”. 

“能亲眼看到创世界纪录的‘人造太阳’让我非常激动。太震撼了!”来自克罗地亚的兰州大学核科学与技术学院教授莫帕感慨道,“这项技术一旦成熟,人类将拥有源源不断的清洁能源。”

“Having the opportunity to witness this record-breaking‘artificial sun’ truly excited me. It's incredibly awe-inspiring!” Professor Mopa from the School of Nuclear Science and Technology at Lanzhou University exclaimed,“Once this technology matures, humanity will have permanent access to clean energy.”

绿水青山就是金山银山,在实现科技进步的同时,安徽加强生态环境保护,推动绿色低碳发展,念好“山水经”,写活“绿文章”。漫步巢湖边的十八联圩生态湿地,国际青年仿佛置身画中,这里水草丰茂,鸟儿翱翔,近年已修复湿地超1100公顷,调查到鸟类110余种,向国际青年生动展示着美丽安徽画卷。

Clean water and lush mountains are invaluable assets. Despite its technological progress, Anhui has also placed a strong emphasis on environmental protection, promoting green and low-carbon development, ensuring harmony with the natural environment to weave a narrative of green development. Strolling along through Shiba Lianwei Wetlands on the shores of Chao Lake, GYLD members said it felt like they were walking through a painting with waterways and vegetation, and birds soaring in the sky, that all vividly showcased the beauty of Anhui. Over the past couple of years, more than 1,100 hectares of wetlands have been restored with over 110 bird species recorded, demonstrating Anhui’s achievements in environmental protection. 

合肥也正致力于打造“新能源汽车之都”,让发展新能源汽车成为中国实现“双碳”目标的重要路径。在蔚来第二先进制造基地,国际青年近距离观察智能电动汽车生产制造过程,他们试乘产品、与企业负责人积极对话,了解新能源汽车产业落实绿色低碳发展要求的创新实践。

Hefei is also committed to projecting itself as an“NEV City” and sees new energy vehicles as a crucial part of China achieving its goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. At the NIO’s second advanced manufacturing base, commonly known as the F2 factory, GYLD members got a first hand look at the production process of intelligent electric vehicles as well as an opportunity to test ride the vehicles and talk with company executives, gaining insights into the innovative practices of the new energy vehicle industry as they work in tandem with green and low-carbon development requirements. GYLD members also learned about the innovative upgrades in NIO’s automotive technology.

Mielnik Maciej Dominik, the General Manager of Wuhan HDH International Logistics Co., Ltd., praised NIO’s achievements,“In my opinion, NIO is a top-tier global player in the new energy vehicle industry. As electric vehicles are becoming more widespread, I look forward to seeing NIO’s continued advancements in materials, batteries, and other aspects.”

最是文化韵流长,传统徽州文化在一次次“破壁”融合中实现着与现实的接续交融。烟雨蒙蒙、粉墙黛瓦,在世界文化遗产地安徽黟县宏村,鳞次栉比的徽派建筑向国际青年讲述着古村历史,流经千年的水系文化令人叹为观止,展示着徽派建筑独特魅力。

在缕缕云雾的黄山,他们参加了第十三届安徽国际文化旅游节,参观非遗技艺大展,感受“迎客松下,迎客天下”的包容壮阔。安徽行中,国际青年还以图片故事的形式分享了自己眼中的“安徽印象”,讲述安徽中国风与国际范的碰撞交融。

Rich and enduring, traditional Hui culture seamlessly weaves together antiquity and modernity. Passing by the white walls and black tiles of Hongcun, a world cultural heritage site located in in Yixian County, intricate Hui-style architecture tells the story of this ancient village, inseparable from the waterways surrounding, was awe-inspiring and illustrated the unique charm of traditional architecture.

Amid the drifting clouds of the Yellow Mountains, GYLD members also took part in the 13th Anhui International Culture and Tourism Festival, experiencing this piece of intangible cultural heritage and immersing themselves in the inclusiveness represented by the iconic“welcoming pine” at the summit. During their visit, GYLD members also shared their impressions of Anhui through photo diaries that showcased the blend of traditional Chinese and international elements in Anhui.

“徽文化拥有丰富的物质和非物质文化遗产,”来自美国的资深设计师谢敏表示,“文化是跨越地域的全人类共通语言,更是我们认识中国、读懂中国的重要密码。”

“Hui culture boasts rich tangible and intangible cultural heritage,” said Min Xie, a designer from the United States.“Culture serves as a universal language transcending geographical boundaries, and it is an important way for us to decode China.”

孙明在与国际青年交流中表示,安徽聚力打造具有全球影响力的产业科技创新中心,古徽州孕育的徽文化更是中国传统文化的“活化石”。希望大家通过此次安徽之旅,共同感受江淮大地上的科技创新大潮,了解粉墙黛瓦的徽派建筑以及博大精深的徽州文化。

In discussions with GYLD members, Sun Ming said that Anhui is actively working to become a globally influential hub of industrial and technological innovation. He noted that Hui culture is a“living fossil” of traditional Chinese culture and expressed the hope that this journey through Anhui provided insights into both the technological innovation in the Jianghuai region as well as the iconic Hui-style architecture and rich Hui culture.

本次活动由当代中国与世界研究院和安徽省人民政府新闻办公室共同举办。“国际青年中国行”是“国际青年领袖对话”项目框架下开展的机制化交流活动,旨在通过邀请国际青年到中国各地走访,深化对华了解,增进彼此友谊,促进共同成长。

This event was jointly organized by the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies (ACCWS) and the Information Office of the People's Government of Anhui Province. The GYLD China Tour is a regular exchange program that aims to deepen global young professionals’ understanding of China, enhance mutual friendship and promote common growth by visiting different places in China.
